18 Months Old!

*This post is nearly 3 weeks late...but at least it got done, right?

*There is another new post below this one.

At 18 months old, Nathan weighs 29.2 lb and is 34" tall.  He wears size 24 month / 2T clothes, size 6 shoes, and size 3 diapers (barely!).

Nathan has grown up so much this past month.  I was quite anxious over the last few months about how I was going to handle both Nathan and a baby this summer, but Nathan has 'aged' and has become so much wiser/rational, that I don't worry about it anymore.  He has learned how to listen and has learned that I will seldom give in to him, so he has become a lot more cooperative.  The three largest areas where I see this are:
1.  He has accepted the rule that he is not allowed to walk by himself in parking lots.  For a couple months he refused to hold my hand, so I told him that he would have to be carried then and so that's what I did...carried a squirming, crying child through the parking lot to our destination/vehicle.  Now, when I tell him that it's a parking lot and he has to hold my hand, he reaches for my hand and holds it without fighting and we walking peacefully, hand-in-hand, through the parking lot.
2.  He does not run in the opposite direction of me as often.  He used to quickly run down the sidewalk as soon as we got off of our front porch, but now he nicely walks to the car (for the most part!).
3.  He finishes all of the food on his plate.  As I've mentioned previously, our rule is that our kids have to eat everything put on their plate (which is always a reasonable amount of food), whether they like it or not.  I try to not cook items that I know they don't like (which are few and far between), but if there is a new recipe that they don't care for, that's too bad for them.  Nathan has learned that he will be put in his crib if he is not wanting to finish and/or that we will eat dessert in front of him.  He still needs reminders, but his plate is always empty at the end of each meal.  Jon and I had a more difficult time instilling this rule on Matthew and Kayla, but I think that Nathan is picking up on it quicker because he sees Matthew and Kayla being rewarded/praised/leaving the table and puts two-and-two together, whereas Matthew and Kayla didn't have anyone to learn from.

Nathan still doesn't have many words in his vocabulary.  He can say:
Mom / Mommy
Dad / Daddy
Lace (Lacey)
Ooooo (Moo, for cows or horses)
Dad (Again)
Is? (accompanied with hand expressions for 'Where is it?')
Other than those words, everything he communicates quite effectively by pointing and saying 'ah!'.

Nathan is learning how to jump.  He enjoys jumping off the last step of stairs and does a bum drop on the trampoline by pretending to do a huge jump and then falling onto his bum.

He loves to put things in their place (still).  Right now, he likes to put garbage in the garbage can.  I can't remember the last time I've had to throw out a disposable diaper!

I noticed him drinking the last of the milk from his cereal bowl, just like Matthew and Kayla do.  He does fantastic at it!  Doesn't even spill a drop!

He says 'uh oh' when he drops his fork or spoon while eating (most often because he likes to try to balance his utensil on his head)

He loves my cell phone.  He knows exactly how to navigate to the games as soon as the password is entered.  I need to hide my phone if I don't want him on it at all.

Nathan loves Thomas the Tank Engine.  If you ask him to bring you a book to read, he'll often bring a Thomas book.

He always wants to colour if Matthew and/or Kayla are.  He strongly prefers to colour with markers, but if Matthew and Kayla are using either crayons or pencil crayons, he'll settle for that.  He knows exactly where the paper and markers are kept, and will help himself.

Nathan LOVES wearing crocs or boots, because he can put them on himself.  Luckily it's Spring, because he wears boots or crocs all over the house ALL THE TIME.  If he puts them on the wrong feet, I just have to tell him to switch them and he does instantly.  He knows exactly whose shoes are whose in our house, and will often bring Matthew and Kayla their shoes when we are getting ready to go somewhere.

He loves it when Matthew lets him wrestle with him.  His favourite is to sit on top of Matthew and have Matthew bounce him up and down.

Yes, I let my kids have suckers just before bed.  I'm trying to get rid of the last of my their halloween candy.

Matthew LOVES it when Nathan is matching him.  Nathan is wearing Matthew's old pajamas, and I just so happened to get the exact same pair in a large garbage bag of clothes I bought for cheap off of the swap for Matthew.

Nathan still asks for/demands his bottle every evening.  He always wants me (as opposed to Jon) to hold him while he is drinking it (he's only been laid on the ground a handful of times), and usually drinks about six of the eight ounces.  He gets a 1/2 tsp of Restoralax added to his bottle and that helps keep him regular.

Nathan loves to brush his teeth.  He'll climb up on the stool, brush his teeth, spit out some toothpaste, have a swallow of water from the cup, and then dump whatever water he doesn't want to drink in the sink.  So cute.  He has to do it exactly like Matthew and Kayla.

When Jon puts Nathan to bed (which he does 95% of the time now), Nathan will give Jon a kiss, and then rests his head on Jon's shoulder whille giving him a hug, and then rests his head on Jon's other shoulder while giving him another hug.  Really sweet.

Nathan's routine:
7:15am  Awake
7:45am  Breakfast (cereal or bread/toast, often with frozen blueberries on the side, which he LOVES)
12:00pm  Lunch
1:00pm  Nap
2:00pm  Awake, followed by a sippy cup full of juice (diluted with water), usually being held
5:00pm  Dinner
6:00pm  Bath (if the kids weren't at my Mom's while I worked, because then she bathed them already)
6:45pm  Bottle
7:45pm  Bed

A Day at Brae Island Regional Park

A last-minute decision was made at 10am this morning to head to Brae Island Regional Park, so that the kids could play in the sand along the river.  We spent about 3.5 hours there, and it was WARM.  The kids had fun digging around in the sand/mud.  They all had a bath tonight to get the sand out of their cracks :)

I noticed a small frog jumping on the sand between our blankets, so Matthew came and picked him up for us (so brave - not like his mom!) and put him in the long grass.

After going through all of the pictures I took, I realized that I barely took any of Kayla.  Woops!  And sorry for posting so many....some times it's easier to post a ton rather than sit and try to pick out my favourites :)

28 Weeks

I think I've hit my 'favourite' part of pregnancy.  I actually look pregnant and not just chubby, and Miss Baby Struik is moving around a fair bit.  A couple weeks ago I asked my doctor if I should be concerned that I wasn't feeling strong movements all day long, to which she replied that as long as I'm feeling movement on a daily basis, I shouldn't worry about it and that at 28 weeks the movement will pick up.  Boy, has it ever!  Yesterday, while I sat at work all day, Miss Baby Struik wouldn't leave me alone.  As soon as the kids were in bed I put on comfy clothes and just laid on the couch, with a sore inner-stomach.

My weight gain to date is now at 26 lbs...still just below a pound a week.

Matthew and Kayla have both definitely felt Miss Baby Struik kicking.  Matthew is definitely more into it, he likes to put his hand on my stomach and lightly push on it to stir Miss Baby Struik so that he can feel her retaliate by kicking.  The first time he felt her kick his eyes lit up, it was priceless.  Kayla's more indifferent to it all.  It's very interesting too see how they interact with their new cousin Emma too - Matthew is way  more motherly than Kayla is.  Nathan is just obsessed with Emma...especially pointing out where her nose and eyes are.  He absolutely loves her.  It will be neat to see him with his own baby sister.

Twelve weeks (+ two weeks because I'm counting on being overdue) to go!  I think once we finish our first camping trip in June the rest of the pregnancy will fly by.  I'm about fifty hours away from having enough insurable hours to qualify for a maternity leave again, so I'll be happy when that's finally done.  The plan is to work until July 1 at a minimum - we'll see what happens after that.

Glucose Tolerance Test

I went today!  I'm pretty proud of myself because I didn't even do the test while pregnant with Nathan, because I just got too busy (it was the summer) and my doctor said it was completely up to me if I wanted to or not.  That time, I chose not to.  This time, because I'm 1.5 years older and had a large baby my last pregnancy I thought it would probably be wise to do the test, just because my chances of having gestational diabetes are increased this time around.  I was actually quite nervous about getting the results.  I have a major sweet tooth.  Major.  There must be some form of chocolate or candy in my daily diet.  It's so bad.  But oh, it tastes so good!  I'm so used to having sweet stuff that drinking a large glass full of a sweet drink at 8:45am didn't even phase me.  I felt like a little kid drinking a glass of stale orange crush.

As I was sitting on the couch tonight eating some five-cent candies I thought that I should probably look up my results on my ehealth.  When I noticed that my results for all of the tests today were flagged for being out of the normal range, I got nervous.  When I looked at the specifics, I noticed that it was just my iron that was super-low (normal is 15-180 ug/L, mine is 9....likely due to me only taking my prenatal vitamins every other day or so I'm assuming), and my glucose test was perfect (normal is 4.4-7.7 mmol/L, mine was 4.9)!  Phew!  I finished eating my five-cent candies with that weight off of my shoulders :)

Dreams

I'm a crazy dreamer.  I often have dreams, and they are always hilarious (to me).  They are often based on something that is going on in my life, but there are always crazy extremes in the dreams.

Kayla woke me up in the middle of the night last night saying, "Mom, in my eyes I saw you and me playing balls together."  I didn't really respond to her, but sent her back to bed.  This morning, I heard her saying to Matthew, "Matthew, in my eyes I saw you and me playing trains, like the trains Grandma has, and I could almost figure out how to make a figure eight."  I then explained to her that she was dreaming...when you see things in your eyes when you are sleeping that means you are having a dream.

I was wondering when they would start being aware of their dreams.  If they are anything like me, I'm sure we'll have plenty of funny dreams happening over the next years.

No Soother for Nathan

I have been debating for the past while about when to take Nathan's soother away.  Currently, he only gets his soother for when he is put down for a nap and for when he goes to bed.  As soon as he wakes up, it gets put away again (out of sight, out of mind).  I took Matthew and Kayla's away when they turned 18 months...which Nathan is one day away from.  I also knew that I had to take it away either sooner (so that I didn't have to worry about still adjusting while we are camping...which we always go in May/June) or later (after the summer because I don't want him adjusting to it while camping, or me having to deal with the extra crying AND a newborn during the summer).

Unintentionally, today became 'the day'.

I was in a little bit of a rush to get my kids dressed and everything packed and us out of the door this morning, only because I didn't decide what we were going to be doing until this morning, so I couldn't do any planning/pre-packing the night before.  When you are going to spend the day/evening away from the house and know the kids are going to be playing outside for most of the day, you need to pack A LOT.  Thank goodness for a vehicle that can hold a lot of bags :).  I needed a stroller, sandals, crocs, a change of clothes for warm weather, a change of clothes for cooler weather, pajamas for at night, bathing suits, towels, sunscreen, diapers, extra clothes for me, watermelon for all, etc.  All to have to put most of it away again when we got home.  Anyways, like I said in my last post, I bring it on myself because I like to always do something.  And...that was all a total tangent.

So in my hustle this morning I couldn't remember where I had put Nathan's soother after he gave it to me when he woke up.  Jon and I had already lost misplaced Nathan's 'blue' soother...so this was the only readily-available one we had...and it was now missing.  Rather than search high and low for it, I grabbed the newborn-sized one we had sitting in our keys basket (that Jon had pulled out of the newborn clothes box a few months back when he needed one and I had it with me, while shopping),  I thought it would due the trick...a soother is a soother, right?

I was wrong.  When I put Nathan down for his nap and passed him his soother he knew immediately that it just didn't feel right.  He kept putting it in his mouth, and then pulling it out and inspecting it.  He started to get angry at me, and threw it on the ground of his playpen (we were at my parents').  I thought, "This is it, this is the time to do this," and I pocketed the newborn soother and explained to him that he was a big boy just like Matthew and Kayla and didn't need a soother.  He was not impressed.  He kept pointing to his mouth and started to get angry at me.

For the next hour and fifteen minutes he cried/yelled for me.  I made numerous attempts to get him to lay down with his blanket, but for the most part I just let him cry.  After over an hour of crying I took him out of his playpen and laid him on the spare bed in the room with me.  He tried to get up, but I explained that if he got up, I was going to put him back in the playpen.  Within a minute he was fast asleep, and I snuck out.

Putting him to bed tonight was smoother.  He was awake for 45 minutes, but he wasn't crying...just whining about not having a soother.  Poor kid...I'm so mean to him :)  It will be nice to not have to remember to pack a soother anymore!  Now, if only I could find his two lost misplaced soothers tonight/tomorrow before he does...

Fun at Crescent Beach

I'm not the type of person to stay at home...I like to get out of the house everyday to do something, and it doesn't matter if it's something big or something small, just something.

Because of the forecasted nice weather, I knew I wanted to be outside today.  I planned with my sister-in-law Laura to take our 'herd' of kids to Derby Reach (with my Mom, too), but changed that last-minute this morning to Crescent Beach when I realized just how nice it was going to be.

The kids had an absolute blast.  They were entertained with buckets, shovels, sand, shells, and water for over three hours.  It was a little chilly at first, but after lunch my kids changed into their shorts and little-did-I-know, came home sporting some sweet farmer's tans.  The breeze was so deceiving as to how warm it actually was!

The water wasn't even that cool because we were by an 'inlet' of water.

We definitely received a few looks of craziness when people saw these six kids so close in age and then only Laura and I.

Total tangent, but something that's slightly amusing...when we are all together with my side of the family the grand-kids are grouped by age, and are affectionately referred to as:

The big kids:
Matthew & Kayla - 4 years old
Remy & Carly - 3.25 years old

The little boys:
Liam - 20 months old
Nathan - 18 months old (almost!)
Jackson - 17 months old (almost!)

The baby:
Emma - 6 weeks old

Anyways...back to the pictures...

Pointing to the airplane.

Love this picture of the girls.  They get along so well, and get along well with Matthew too...although they have all started to say "girls only" when they are hanging out and don't want Matthew with them.  Matthew desperately needs the 'little boys' to grow up a little quicker!

Nathan and Liam sat by this log for quite a while, playing with the rocks on it.

Can't forget about this little girl!  She's such a great baby, I'm sure people didn't even realize we had a 7th child there too!

The girls insisted that I come and take a picture of them on the bench...

...and then they wanted one of just the 'big' kids...

...and one of just the 'little' boys...

...and one of them standing on the bench....

...and what are the chances that we would meet Jackson there, too?  Gotta take another picture to include all of the Vander Ende grand-kids!
