Matthew's Eye Appointment

I took just Matthew with me to Dr. Cline's office this time, and left Kayla and Nathan with my Mom.  We first stopped at B&W Insurance to renew the Tahoe's insurance, where Matthew was told he could choose one candy.  He chose Smarties.  As he was standing there waiting, he told me that he was going to share with Kayla when we got home.  I explained to them that Kayla was his twin sister, and so they told Matthew he could choose one thing for Kayla, too.  He was so excited to give Kayla her 'present'.

Matthew's eye appointment went really well.  His left eye was able to read the letters just as well as his right eye could, which wasn't the case last time!  They definitely still see that when he focuses on objects close to him that his left eye drifts inwards.  We were told that he doesn't have to wear his patch anymore, and they would like to see us back in three months.  If his vision is the same in both eyes, then we can discuss what to do about his eye drifting inwards.  If his vision is not the same in both eyes, then that will have to be addressed first.

8 Months Old! and 3 1/4 Years Old!

At eight months old, Nathan weighs 22 lb 3 oz and is 29" tall.  He is well into his 12-18 months clothes, and we've really started to box up his 9-12 months clothes.  I find it's always deceiving how well they can fit into something...I thought the clothes I was trying on him this week were going to be way too big.  I was wrong.

We moved Nathan out of his infant carseat and into a rear-facing toddler carseat this month.  He proved that he was able to sit nicely in the kid section of the grocery cart, and so I made the switch.

Nathan understands how to play peek-a-boo, and knows how I do the actions with him to "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," and "If You're Happy and You Know It."  He can't do the actions himself, but guides my hands to doing them.

He usually only has his soother when he's sleeping, or if we're out in public or at a family function and he's being grumpy/whiny.

Nathan has really learned how to stand by toys/furniture.  He is also learning how to walk holding onto my hands.  He's improved quite a bit since he turned seven months as he used to only just stand.  He is aware of his ability to get around (with assistance) and is becoming less content with just sitting and playing toys.  Now, if he'd only learn to crawl.  Who am I kidding?  If he'd only learn to be content on his tummy... :)

He LOVES having a bath.  Bonus if Matthew and Kayla are bathing with him.  And don't take him out if he's not quite ready...he gets really angry.

MATTHEW - 3 1/4 YEARS OLD
At 39 months old, Matthew weighs 29.2 lb and is 3' 2.5" tall.  He has definitely had a growth spurt as all of his pants seem to be too short.  Every time he wears a different pair he asks me if I can see his ankles.

This past week, Matthew has been a great eater.  He finishes all of his food quickly, and without much assistance.  I hope he keeps it up!

He loves music, and has always loved the kids radio we received in a free bag of toys when they were super-young.  Jon gave him a pair of headphones to use with it, and now he has become OBSESSED with that radio.  He would listen to it all day long if I let him.  It's like having a teenager in the house!  Right now, as I type this, he is blowing a whistle and shaking a tambourine.

My favourite expression of his is his response to when you ask him if you can do something:  he responds saying, "You may can..." rather than just "you may" or "you can".  It's so cute.  He still tells me daily that he likes or loves me.

Matthew loves to try to figure out how things work, carefully inspecting toys that move or watching Jon/my Dad fix things.

Matthew has followed Kayla's lead with having invisible friends, and his social circle has expanded from just being Elmo to now including Big Bird.

I introduced Matthew to Candyland and Dominos (a simplified version) this month.  Some times he has the attention span for Candyland, sometimes not.

Matthew does well with playgrounds now.  He is tall enough and strong enough and confident enough to do most /all of the climbing features.  He's not quite able to do hopscotch yet because he can't jump while balancing on one foot.

KAYLA - 3 1/4 YEARS OLD
At 39 months old, Kayla weighs 34.2 lb and is 3' 3.5" tall.

When she's in a good mood, she talks ALL THE TIME and is very clear (for the most part).  The things she thinks about and comes up with are hilarious.  You can tell she is always thinking about everything, because it happens daily where she will say something out of the blue, always starting with "Mom, you know what?!?!?"  She then goes on to state something, with such confidence/determination/enthusiasm.  It's hilarious.  It's those moments that I would love to catch on video...but it would require me to have a video camera running 24/7.

She always makes sure that their toys are put away in the right spot, because it drives her nuts if they aren't.  I wonder who she gets that from?  If they aren't in the right spot she blames Jon's mom, because after they babysat for us once they cleaned up the toys, but of course, they didn't know where each thing went so it was done wrong.  I made the mistake of explaining that, "Oma doesn't know where each toy goes" and so now she blames Oma for everything.

She is great at staying up late because she knows how to sleep in.  This past Monday she went to bed at 9:30pm, and then slept until 9:30am.  She needs her sleep though, because when she's tired she starts having her huge meltdowns.  Last night, Jon thought she was going to pass out from crying so hysterically over who-knows-what.  Other than her occasional (every other week?) meltdowns, she is so easy to parent.

Kayla talks about and plays with "her friends" on a daily basis.  Her social circle has expanded to include Dora, Princess, and Tinkerbell.

I introduced Kayla to Candyland and Dominos (a simplified version) this month.

Kayla has really gained confidence on her balance bike, often lifting her feet to coast now.  I took her on her first official bike-ride to the Fruiticana yesterday and she did great.  She has also learned how to ride a tricycle.  I'm hoping that she'll get even better at both (pedaling and balancing) over this summer, and then maybe a "big kids" bike will be her Christmas present this year?

She does well with playgrounds now.  She is tall enough and strong enough and confident enough to do most /all of the climbing features.  She also learned how to do hopscotch, and has re-learned how to do a somersault (she had forgotten apparently!).

A Little Bit of Everything...

I took the kids to the mall today to run some errands.  We had spent the last three days at home all day, and so we needed to get out and do something.  I had a couple of returns to do, and wanted to get them all weighed at the health unit and so off we went.  I only took the single stroller with me, as I assumed that Matthew and Kayla would want to run/walk in the mall.  I was wrong.  Kayla ended up sitting on the 'tip' of the stroller (the footrest over the front tire), and I piggy-backed Matthew while pushing the stroller.  Super Mom!  Luckily Matthew doesn't weigh a whole lot!  Anyways, we did a return at Wal-Mart and then went to use the elevator to go up to Old Navy.  Unfortunately, the elevator was out of order.  Rather than scouring the mall for another one, I thought Matthew and Kayla could come up the escalator with me.  They've done it a few times, and so I figured I could hold the stroller on the escalator with them standing nicely beside me.  In my head, I was Super Mom again.  I was wrong.  I got on fine, as did Kayla.  Unfortunately, Matthew must have lost his balance stepping on because he stumbled and then grabbed the wall/edge for support.  He didn't realize that that wall doesn't move with the escalator, which caused him to fall down a few steps on his back.  I tried to reach for him quickly, but I couldn't hold the stroller in place and grab him.  Luckily, a young lady (early 20s?) saw me struggling and heard Matthew crying/screaming and ran up the escalator to rescue him.  BIG PARENTING FAIL.  I know they can do the escalator, I just should have talked them through it first.  Luckily, no one was injured.  Thank you to the kind stranger!

While we were in the parking lot, climbing into the car to go home, a truck was backing up into the stall a few stalls over from us.  Kayla exclaimed that he couldn't turn the other way otherwise he would crash and "Jesus would be angry!"

On our drive home, we were all sitting silently in the car.  Out of the blue, Kayla pipes up, "You know what, Mom?!?!?  Daddy sleeps in just his underwear.  Else he might pee in bed."  So completely random.  We talked about the clothing we sleep in (pajamas for them, underwear for Jon), and I realized that she thinks underwear holds our pee in our bodies.  Jon might have to give her a lesson in anatomy.

Speaking of teaching....(this is the last point, I promise)...I am so frustrated with the teacher strike right now.  Not only is Jon receiving a 10% wage cut on the days he does work, but on the days when they're striking, he doesn't get paid at all!  I was assuming because he was salary that he was only affected by the 10% wage cut.  Boy, was I wrong.  The government and the BCTF need to get things figured out soon.  Thank goodness for my maternity leave pay!  And for the greenhouses, for that matter.  Every day that Jon is (supposed to be) striking he goes to work for the greenhouses.  The bills have to get paid somehow!

Things Kids Say

Matthew and Kayla have started to use the word "stupid" on occasion, and always in the right context, but never about each other.  They've definitely learned this word from myself and my Mom as we use it too...so should I be getting mad?  LOL.  For example, Matthew was experiencing constipation for the first time, and so while he was sitting on the toilet pushing as hard as he could, with tears welling up in his eyes, he said, "This poo is stupid."

While I was sitting outside in the backyard with Matthew, Kayla, and Nathan, Kayla started to rip the grass out and said, "Daddy says I'm not allowed to rip out the grass.  Daddy at work now though so Daddy can't say it."  I had to hide my laughter and actually explain to her that rules are rules no matter what.
